Frequently Asked Questions
Does it hurt? Most people find there is very little pain due to the patented cooling system (DCD™ Cooling) used by our medical grade laser. It is normal to feel a heat sensation and this is often described similar to a flick with a rubber band. During the test patch you are able to see how well you will tolerate your treatment. If you are concerned at all, an anesthetic cream can be applied prior to treatment. Will my hair be permanently removed – forever? Hair reduction is still a relatively new procedure and it is not possible to predict long-term results. Depending on individual’s skin and hair colour and other factors, most people will get a good reduction in hair growth and hair will be permanently reduced. Some people may need an occasional touch up treatment or choose to shave or wax very few months. It is rare for the treatment not to work and these cases have to be assessed individually. Can hair be removed from any body area? Generally the answer is yes, it is safe to remove hair from all body areas, however, we will assess each individual during the consultation and give you personalised advice. Can all hair colours be treated? Because the light is attracted to dark pigment, the treatment does not work on white, blond, grey and light red hair. We will assess your hair colour and offer a free test patch to assess How often should I have a treatment? Latest research shows that it is best to have a treatment when you notice new regrowth coming through. This indicates that your hair is in the early growth stage and will respond best to treatment. Generally we recommend having a treatment every 6 – 8 weeks for body areas, for facial hair it is best to treat every 4 weeks. How many treatments do I need? Depending on each individual’s hair growth cycles, most people require between 4 and 8 treatments. Results also depend on each person’s hair colour and hair thickness as well as skin colour and any relevant medical conditions. Hair growth due to hormonal reasons may need additional and sometimes ongoing treatments. Laser hair reduction is the best form of ongoing hair management, offering longer hair free periods between treatments than waxing, with gradual reduction in growth. How should I care for my skin after treatment? After treatment it is important to keep the skin cool. We will apply a cooling, soothing gel after each treatment and also recommend that you use this soothing gel at home for a few days or until your skin has settled. The most important thing to remember is to stay out of the sun after your treatment as this can lead to skin irritations and pigmentation changes! Can I have a tan? No! A suntan (including solarium) is the greatest cause of unwanted side effects. Spray tans are a good solution in between, however, it is important to exfoliate and completely remove the tan before your treatment. Do I have to prepare my skin? *You should strictly avoid sun tanning *You may use artificial tanning products but discontinue 2 weeks before your treatment *Avoid waxing, plucking or electrolysis for 4 - 6 weeks before your laser treatment *You can shave or use depilatory creams in-between treatments * If you have darker skin, you should consider a bleaching cream or skin lightening regimen * You should shave the treatment areas within 24 hours prior to treatment * Anesthetic cream can be applied 1 hour prior to treatment What are possible side effects? It is normal to experience some redness and swelling around the hair follicles – similar to after waxing. The skin may feel a bit warm and tender, similar to a mild sun burn; this should settle within a few hours to a few days. More severe side effects may include prolonged redness, scabbing, blisters, pigmentation changes (including hyper and hypo pigmentation), in the worst cases infection and scarring. Luckily, these risks are quite rare. People who have darker skin or a tan are at greater risk of unwanted side effects. To keep your skin looking great we perform a test patch prior to any treatment. This way we can prevent these side effects and give you maximum benefit from your laser treatment. Most important for everyone to remember: Keep the treatment area protected with SPF 30+ and out of the sun during your course of treatment. How does it work? A light with a special wavelength is used to damage the hair follicles. The light targets the pigment in the hair in order to heat up and destroy the follicle. This prevents hair from growing back. Only hair in the active growth cycle can be effectively treated, therefore multiple treatments are needed. Because the light is attracted to pigment, you should stay out of the sun for a few weeks before you go for a laser hair reduction treatment. When you have a tan, your skin pigment will absorb the laser light as well and the risk of unwanted side effects is greatly increased. What is laser hair reduction? Many people believe that laser hair reduction is simply a cosmetic procedure, because it has become so common over the last few years. However, laser hair reduction is still considered to be a medical procedure because of the risks and side effects associated with the procedure. Only fully qualified and accredited therapists should perform this procedure following a thorough assessment and test patch.
